Iontophoresis

3 October 2014, by MAILLARD H.

Summary

Iontophoresis or ionophoresis consists of exposing the skin to an electric current. There are essentially two indications for ionophoresis: the treatment of hyperhidrosis and transdermal drug delivery. The FDA in the United States has recently granted marketing authorisations for two ionophoretic systems for pain management. The first system which contains lidocain (LidoSite™) was developed to provide local analgesia prior to injections. The second product which contains fentanyl (Ionsys™) is designed to produce a systemic effect and was developed for the management of postoperative pain.

This article only describes ionophoresis use for the treatment of hyperhidrosis.
