Summary
The discovery of the anti-inflammatory properties of glucocorticoids, which have been used therapeutically since the late 1940s, revolutionised the management of a large number of diseases involving inflammation, immune dysfunction or neoplasm. The mechanisms of action and the pharmacological properties of glucocorticoids have been studied over time, which has brought to light their numerous potential targets. Knowledge of these is, however, still incomplete. Glucocorticoids do have a poor reputation due to their side effects, which are common but can sometimes be avoided.
