Summary
Mastocytosis is caused by build-up of mast cells in the tissues (Table I). It is a rare but not exceptional disorder which can arise at any age and affects men and women equally. The clinical manifestations are caused both by abnormal accumulation of mast cells in the tissues and the effects of the inflammatory mediators released by these cells. The prognosis varies depending on the age of the patient and the organs affected. Treatment has not been standardised and is based more on experience than on controlled studies with a high level of evidence. Patients and their families must nonetheless be aware of the steps to be taken to prevent the reactions (flushing, urticaria, inflammation, etc. and other hypersensitivity reactions) caused by the condition.
